These seascapes by Roy Prinz feature scenes from Santa Barbara and coastal areas of western America. The Santa Barbara and central California coastline stretches from the Rincon, Santa Barbara, the Gaviota Coast before curving north at Point Conception continuing to Big Sur and Carmel. There are numerous unspoiled beaches offering subjects for seascapes. Ocean paintings challenge the seascape artist in representing the changing light, movement of the water and the surrounding environment. These seascape paintings attempt to capture the harmony of these elements and bring the viewer into the narrative. Following the gallery pictures is a brief description about the location and artist insight to each seascape painting.

One of Big Sur's reclusive beaches, this is a shoreline view of "Pfeiffer Beach Waves". Early morning sun lights the distance view of the "Garrapatta Coast". Garrapatta State Park features a rugged coastal area as this inlet and "Garrapatta Rocks". A short drive south of Carmel offers this dramatic view of the "Carmel Highlands' Cove". A spectacular view of the rugged coast south of Carmel, "Rocky Coast Along Big Sur". Santa Barbara has great winter weather, "Clouds Over East Beach" shows a typical day looking down the coast with the Montecito hills in the background. The 17 Mile Drive wanders through Pebble Beach offering views of the "Shorebreak at Spanish Bay". The afternoon light catches the breaking surf at "Pinos Point" along the southern entrance to Monterey Bay in Pacific Grove. "Lighthouse Point" features this prominent bluff on a sunny spring day along Santa Barbara's Mesa facing west along the coast. "Point Lobos Rocks" is a small glimpse of this dramatic reserve of land in Carmel. After an early morning start the drive along California's central coast remained gray; "Fog Over Big Sur" captures the essence of that day. “Shoreline Beach” stretches to the west from the Santa Barbara harbor and is a popular spot for residents to walk along the shore. This view is looking towards the east with the hills behind Montecito dappled by the filtered sunlight of winter clouds, the city and harbor are hidden by the prominent cliff. - “Devil’s Point” is a pinnacle of land found along the coast of Oregon in a state park known as the Devil’s Punchbowl. This craggy outcropping defined one of the inlets where the ocean surges were forced between a narrow gap creating an explosive burst of spray. This seascape painting depicts the roiling sea as it recedes from covering this sprig of land. - The setting for “Leadbetter Beach Sunset” is closer to home. This is a winter view late in the day from one of Santa Barbara’s popular beaches; no crowds just a few ocean birds and seaweed along the shore. The fading light and glowing colors appear to make the sky and sea electric. - The following series of seascape paintings are of the Gaviota Coast an unspoiled coastal area consisting of old ranches and the Los Padres National Forest west of Santa Barbara. “Gaviota Cliffs” depicts a dramatic stretch of coastline after a winter storm with cumulus clouds and late afternoon sun. “Gaviota Beach” is a mid day winter view of one of the many beaches along the Santa Barbara coast. “Gaviota Coast” shows the setting winter sun illuminating the western beaches of Gaviota. - “Wave” a simple study of the ocean and one of its many faces.
